Dubai to Introduce “Smart Medical Visa”

By Our Staff Writer

Dubai has announced a new initiative to simplify medical visa procedures for international patients as part of efforts to strengthen its position as a global healthcare and medical tourism destination.

The General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA Dubai) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a more integrated healthcare journey for overseas patients. The agreement aims to streamline services from the medical visa application stage through treatment and post-recovery follow-up.

“The partnership seeks to strengthen integration between residency, visa, and healthcare services,” Dubai Media Office wrote on X.

The agreement was signed by Lt-Gen Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, and Dr Alawi Sheikh Ali, Director General of DHA. Lt-Gen Al Marri said the partnership aims to “develop a more flexible and seamless ecosystem that connects residency and healthcare services”.

Dr Alawi said it will support Dubai’s efforts to consolidate its position as a global destination for healthcare and wellness.

Overseas patients can enter the UAE for treatment under the sponsorship of the medical establishment where they are getting treatment. Medical tourism visas in Dubai are available for 90 or 180 days, with single- and multiple-entry options. They can be renewed if extended treatment is required.

Companion visas are also available for those supporting patients during treatment and recovery. These can be extended only once after furnishing a duly certified medical report stating that his/her presence is needed.
