This region is tipped to become the new Mecca for wellness tourism in 2026!

Destination Wellness

It’s a natural phenomenon that the old order changeth for new ones! Well, that is fast happening in the wellness tourism sector as well!! But what is surprising is that the new markets which are pushing behind the old favourites are the ones which hardly figured in the wellness travel circuit till recent times.

The region, which hitherto, was well known globally for its dotting oil wells and expansive oasis — the Middle East — is sprinting to the forefront of wellness tourism, predicted to emerge as the most sought-after destination for those who will be hitting their restorative journeys in 2026. The region’s unique value proposition of masterful blending of innovative wellness concepts with luxury amenities is projected to accelerate its rising status in the global wellness sector. Besides, the region’s strategic location makes it accessible to international tourists seeking wellness retreats.

Sector experts said it’s the successful formula of bending traditional and modern therapies, offered in luxurious settings which are making the wellness hubs in the region highly sought after. While the high-end, culturally rich wellness hubs like AMAALA in Saudi Arabia and Dubai’s Palm are leading the race to attract the rich and famous wellness travellers, rising number of wellness centres across the urban and remote areas of the region are witnessing an influx of the new breed of mind-body-wellbeing seeking travellers — both primary and secondary wellness tourists. Industry players the fact that the high-quality wellness and medical treatments offered in the centres in the Middle East are significantly cheaper than in Western countries is also a key factor for attracting global interest.

However, beyond luxury resorts and spa tourism, emergence of new and unconventional wellness practices is making the Gulf region into a much sought-after destination for wellness travellers from around the world. The diverse landscapes of the region — from deserts to mountains and coastlines — are also major growth factors for its rapidly growing wellness tourism sector. Besides the comfort of experiencing traditional healing with modern luxury, spas, and nature-based activities like hiking and meditation retreats in places like Oman and the UAE are also reasons for enticing travellers who undertake transformative journeys to this region.

Wellness travellers can experience integrated traditional practices like Hammams, Bedouin-inspired rituals or the India-influenced Ayurvedic treatments in the several wellness hubs and centres in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, while centres in Oman and Jordan offer desert sanctuaries for spiritual renewal. The pristine coastlines of the region are billed as among the best for relaxation.

UAE, Saudi Arabia to see fast rise in global pecking order for wellness tourism

As is the general trend in this region, the government-led massive investments and promotions are fuelling the growth in the sector. The UAE and Saudi Arabia are in the forefront driving the initiatives, making massive investments in developing a string of wellness hubs to provide holistic mind-body wellbeing offerings. With the solid backing of the petro-dollar-filled government entities, the region’s wellness — as well as medical tourism — sectors are predicted to grow leaps and bounds in 2026 and beyond.

The blueprints being readied and implemented by these entities are, experts said, targeted to tap the massive rise in both primary and secondary wellness travellers in recent years. The post-Covid years are clearly seeing the emergence of recast health preservation as a lifestyle imperative, vaulting immunity-building, stress reduction, and disease prevention to the heart of travel decision-making.

The digital-nomad visa initiative by countries like the UAE, though intended to attract global talent and professionals, is also seen to be driving growth in the wellness sector in the country — as also in the region. The new breed of professionals is said to be combining their daily work routines with their newly found fad for wellness regimens, spurring significant growth in the sector. Interestingly, industry players in the UAE and the region are aiding to further augment this trend by adding co-working zones and high-speed broadband at their centres, enabling enough flexibility to professionals to easily carry out their virtual meetings and their mind-body rejuvenation activities side by side. Guests can also engage in ‘slow wellness’ programmes at some of these centres, enabling them to pursue incremental lifestyle change over multi-month residencies — a win-win for both well-being seekers and the industry players.

Move to make wellness initiatives part of national visions attract global attention

The move to incorporate wellness initiatives into the national visions by countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar also seems to be playing a role in attracting attention of the global wellness industry — both tourists and market players — to the Middle East region. These countries are integrating wellness tourism into their economic diversification and tourism-infrastructure development plans, bidding to become global wellness hubs.

This, along with traditional Arabic healing practices, industry experts said, are acting as a key differentiator, helping the region to fast becoming the globally top destination for wellness travellers. The region’s deserts, coastlines, and high-altitude areas provide settings ideal for wellness. Added to this is the newly offered wellness programmes, rooted in traditional practices such as Bedouin traditions and regional herbs.

Regional governments of the UAE and Saudi Arabia have also set their eyes on attracting affluent visitors through development of high-end luxury wellness resorts in select parts of their respective regions. Destinations like Red Sea Global’s AMAALA, which will include an unprecedented 30 world-class wellness destinations when complete, and AlUla in Saudi Arabia and Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar in Oman are intended to provide curated immersive programes to wellness seekers, focused on rejuvenation, mindfulness, detoxification, and meditation, while cities like Dubai are charting out a new path, integrating wellness into urban hospitality.

The regional governments are also investing heavily to develop infrastructure to improve connectivity to the new wellness destinations coming up in their rural and remote regions. The governments here are also putting in place new strategies to tie-up with private entities to invest in infrastructure to develop potential wellness centres in the remote areas.

The newly identified public-private partnership tie-up strategy, sector experts said, is intended to develop wellness hubs in both urban and remote areas as the industry’s breadth allows for multiple leaders across different specialties. This, in turn, is expected to help the region to boost its potentials to be the new global hub for wellness tourism, fuelling a booming wellness economy in the region. The growing international interest in its holistic traditions, besides strong internal demand show the efforts are paying off in a big way.
