2026 to be a breakout year for wellness travel, predict experts, studies

By James Mathew

2026 is predicted to be a transformative year for wellness travel, studies and sector experts project a massive rise in the wellness-related travel in the coming year. The predictions are based on the rising trend of travellers, especially the well-heeled, upwardly mobile and professionals, increasingly focusing on more meaningful, physical and mental wellbeing-driven journeys.

2026 is also anticipated to see health-conscious holiday makers upping their ante to embrace new, exotic activities for rejuvenation. Immersive forest bathing, high-tech sleep retreats, science-backed experiences such as longevity labs and bio-hacking, neuro-fitness and brain health boot camps are among the new list of activities that are expected to become a fad among wellness travellers in the new year, moving beyond the traditional spa indulgences. “Today’s travellers, especially Gen Z — are looking for more than spa days, they’re embracing high-tech and more personalised wellness experiences that support holistic transformation,” reveals latest research by Collinson International, a globally-leading firm in traveller experiences.

The study findings show that travellers worldwide — especially Gen Z — are redefining what truly meaningful travel looks like. For the new breed of wellbeing-seeking travellers, it’s not about how much you spend, but how unique and beneficial the travel experiences are for wellness as a long-term investment. Increasingly, holiday travel breaks are part of the regular health maintenance routine for them.

The pivot towards purposeful travel — key to living not just a longer life, but a healthier, happier life — is projected to gain further momentum in 2026, propelled by the rising thrust on traveling to return feeling better than when they arrived. This, in turn, is set to fuel extraordinary growth for the sector, with the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) estimates to reach nearly $9 trillion by 2028.

Luxury travel fast evolves into wellness travel

Luxury travel is also projected to see further evolution in 2026, with less focus on extravagance and more on personalised, seamless, and made to measure experiences. “Travel is in the midst of a revolution. As we head into 2026, the rules are being rewritten by travellers who crave more meaning, wellness, and innovation at every turn,” said Priyanka Lakhani, Vice President of Collinson International. Collinson’s latest research reveals that today “holiday” means so much more than a sun lounger. “Travel is becoming smarter, more personal, and more purposeful than ever,” Lakhani said.

2026 is also projected to be shaping up to be the ‘Year of the Bucket List’, with the Mastercard European Travel in 2025 Report revealing that travellers are increasingly prioritising unforgettable, purpose-led experiences over material purchases. According to the report, 70 percent of European travellers rank bucket-list activities as a top priority.

According to recent Condé Nast Traveler report, longevity clinics and bio-hack clubs will be the mainstay of business — or bleisure travellers — in 2026, in line with their surging popularity in each passing year. The changing approach of the new and fast emerging breed of wellness travellers looking to maintain their health goals on the road and combat jet-lag is driving this.

Wellness travellers seek quantifiable results

Latest researches reveal that six dimensions of wellness — health, sleep, nutrition, fitness, appearance, and mindfulness — figure prominently for today’s health-conscious travellers. Younger consumers are also conceptualizing wellness in new ways.

This is leading to emergence of more and more regional wellness centres, as also unique practices for physical and mental well-being. For instance, studies show newly popular activities such as forest bathing’s benefits for stress reduction, immune function, and mental health. Market players in select areas across the Europe including Germany, the UK and some of the Scandinavian countries, are also coming up with certified forest bathing programmes. These programmes, which provide scientific credibility, appeal to modern wellness travellers seeking evidence-based experiences, expected to further boost the wellness travel segment.

Wellness retreats, which are incorporating EEG neurofeedback, nootropic supplementation, and cognitive training programmes, are another emerging attraction projected to get more traction with wellness travellers in 2026. According to the Condé Nast Traveler report, brain bootcamps — providing specially curated programmes combining ancient practices like meditation with modern neuroscience, offering measurable improvements in focus, memory, and mental clarity — featured as a major 2025 trend — are expected to gain further popularity in the coming year, on the back of growing interest in cognitive optimization alongside physical wellness.

Women to be major drivers for wellness travel segment in 2026

As awareness around menopause, hormone balance, and women-specific health challenges rapidly increase, women’s health is projected to transition from niche wellness offerings to mainstream demand in 2026, leading to women wellness travellers to emerge as major drivers of growth for this sector in the coming year. This trend is predicted to gain more currency next year amidst broader societal changes in how women’s health issues are discussed and addressed. The number of women, who are taking to travel as a means to address and support their health concerns and general well-being, away from their daily chores, are projected to see a major surge in 2026 amidst the mushrooming of women-specific retreats combining cutting-edge medical expertise with holistic approach. These facilities offer everything from hormone testing and nutritional guidance to stress management and community building.

New trends to spur diversification within wellness tourism

The new trends are predicted to cause major diversification within the wellness tourism sector in 2026.The market is expected to see fragmenting into specialized niches serving specific health and wellness goals, outgrowing the one-size-fits-all spa experiences.

Industry experts said the churn will be in response to addressing the rising demand for personalised services and tangible results by the new set of travellers. Today’s wellness travellers are more informed and specific in their requirements than ever before. They’re seeking experiences backed by science, delivered by qualified practitioners, and designed to provide lasting benefits beyond the travel period itself, experts said.

A standout trend predicted for 2026 is the rise of transformative wellness travel, with travellers moving beyond traditional leisure breaks to seek deeper rest, renewal, and meaningful rejuvenation. Travellers want to understand what they’re experiencing and how to continue beneficial practices at home.
